Jo’s story

For Jo, not having children was never an option. Ever since a young age, she knew that she wanted to be a mother.

“Boyfriends came and went, but having a baby of my own was always in the back of my mind,” explained Jo, from Brentwood, a learning and development coach whose work often took her overseas. Everyone told me I had ‘plenty of time’ but I was 39 and it didn’t feel like that at all.”

Jo started looking into IUI using donor sperm and researching fertility clinics online.

From my very first contact with Sarah over the phone everything felt right. I went along to meet her and the team, had some tests and talked through all my options. I was determined to give IUI a try.

“I was resistant to IVF initially. A friend of mine had conceived twins using IUI and I felt this was the way forward for me.”

Jo came across an open day at a clinic, booked an appointment but was disappointed when her consultation felt rushed and impersonal. She decided to look elsewhere and contacted Simply Fertility.

Jo underwent IUI late in the summer of 2015, but it didn’t work and the setback was difficult.

“My ovarian reserve was low and it was hard to get my head around everything, but after speaking with the Simply Fertility team, and my friends and family, I decided to embark on IVF.”

Twelve of Jo’s eggs were collected, of which 9 fertilised successfully. Six embryos became day five blastocysts and one was transferred. Unfortunately, the IVF was unsuccessful.

Three months later Jo returned to the clinic for frozen embryo transfer. After a nerve-racking wait, her pregnancy test proved positive.

“I couldn’t believe it. The feeling when I went for my seven week scan and saw the heart beat for the first time was amazing.”

Jo is now the proud mum of Tallulah, born on January 18th weighing 6lb 13 oz. She has taken a year off work to spend with her new baby daughter.

“It’s always been my dream to become a mum and I am so lucky to have her. Of course it’s hard work on my own but everything has worked out and I couldn’t be happier. Sometimes I look at Tallulah and just take it all in.”

As well as the staff at Simply Fertility, Jo has benefitted from support from the Donor Conception Network, a support group she was put in touch with by her fertility counsellor. The ‘buddy’ scheme and library of resources have been invaluable.

“As a single parent, it’s been great to speak to others in the same position as me. Throughout all of this, I’ve tried to stay positive yet realistic and hope that in future I will be able to share my experience to help others in a similar situation.”

“I can’t thank everyone at Simply Fertility enough for all they have done for me. They have all been so lovely and supportive and they have given me a beautiful daughter who means the world to me. I can’t stop sending the team photos and updates. Will I do it again – let’s wait and see!”
